User Research at Google Maps

Jens Riegelsberger, Google Research

My area of work at Google recently has become a hot topic in Silicon Valley: the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Or, in everyday language, the user experience of Google Maps.

Many of us now carry a GIS everywhere every day, usually in the form of our smartphones. So, both fields, HCI and GIS, have undergone considerable change: from being relatively specialized areas with small, but clearly defined expert user groups to shaping products that large parts of the population depend on every day.

What does this mean for how we do user research on the Google Maps team at Google? In this talk, I'll give an overview on our research approaches, how we learn about user needs and usability, and future research questions we face.
